I've made holiday themed lunches for Octopus Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. We've even made special lunches for a picnic and for rainy days. I haven't made a Valentine's Day themed lunch yet, so I've been playing with some ideas. Lunch finally ended up being a puzzle sandwich with fruit flowers and a strawberry heart.
I made a peanut butter and jelly (strawberry of course for the red color) sandwich. I used a puzzle sandwich cutter to cut out the pieces. You could also use a heart shaped sandwich cutter, but my boys love the puzzle one the best. I placed a strawberry heart in the middle of the sandwich. To make the strawberry heart, you just need a red strawberry that ends in a single point. Cut a V shape out of the middle to remove the stem area and you have a heart shape!
Next, I peeled a kiwi and cut it into slices. I used a small flower cookie cutter to cut out flower shapes from the kiwi. DM Tip: I found that the firmer kiwis worked better and held the flower shape once they were cut. The really ripe ones tended to sag and fall apart at the edges. I placed the kiwis around the plate and topped with blueberries and raspberries to create fruit flowers.
Higgins ate the last of the yogurt for breakfast, or I would have made the frozen Fruity Yogurt Flowers to go with the lunch. The boys loved the lunch and gobbled it all up.
