Today is National Cotton Candy Day!
History of Cotton Candy:
The first record of cotton candy was in the 16th century. William Morrison (a dentist!) and John Wharton (confectioner) created the first machine spun cotton candy in 1897. They introduced it at the World's Fair in 1904, calling it Fairy Floss.
In 1921, Joseph Lascaux (another dentist!) created another cotton candy machine and patented the name "cotton candy".
The automatic cotton candy machine was made in the 1970's and enabled packaging and shipping of the fluffy sweetness.
What is Cotton Candy? Cotton Candy is also called Candy Floss or Fairy Floss. It is spun sugar. A serving size is usually an ounce. Cotton Candy is naturally white, but flavoring and food coloring are added to change the taste and color.
How Is It Made? The cotton candy machine usually has a small bowl in which special sugar is poured. (Granulated sugar spins out but doesn't melt and large sugar crystals will not make enough contact with the heater.) The sugar is heated and spun around to be forced through small holes in the machine. When the sugar hits the cooler air, it solidifies again. There is a larger bowl (the top of the machine), where the cotton candy gathers. Once enough cotton candy has gathered, you can grab it out to stick in a bag (or eat right away!) or twirl onto a stick/cone.
Some places even have a cotton candy vending machine that makes single servings right there in front of you!
